GEOMOTORSPORT.ID - Haas F1 Team has just announced that they will abandon the development of the 2021 car and use all of their resources to develop the 2022 car. This announcement means that Haas will use the same car from the upcoming preseason test up until the final race of the 2021 season without any major upgrades.

This move has a severe consequence for this season, as this could potentially lead Haas to finish at the bottom of the table this season. But Haas might benefit from this move in the middle-long term, especially heading toward the all-new regulation in 2022.

Heading toward this season, Haas announced that they will use an all-new line up for the upcoming season by signing on two rookies in last year F2 Champion Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin. The move indicates a significant shift in the Kannapolis-based team as they opted to sign young driver with talent and financial backing in order to provide more funds to improve the car development and their overall operations.

There are some risks in using two rookies at the same time, especially in terms of providing input for car setup and development to the engineer as they still adapting to the car and the way F1 team operates, which is quite different than in junior category. But with team now “abandon” its 2021 season, it will provide the right environment for both Schumacher and Mazepin as the team will then to focus on provide and preparing both rookies with the much-needed learning experience on the Formula 1 operations.

More crucially, it was recently announced that Haas has recruited former Ferrari’s Head of Chassis Engineering Simone Resta, as part of their enhanced relationship with the Maranello-based team. Not only they get the service of Resta, but Haas also announce that they are set to take on some Ferrari personnel as well as Ferrari have to deal with the budget cap regulations.

This additional personnel, as well as cash injection provided by both Schumacher and Mazepin, will provide Haas with a much-needed boost heading toward the new regulation next year, as one of the team’s drawback was with their engineering and financial side.

Also, from the R&D standpoint, Haas will get a significant amount of time for developing their Aero for the next season as per the new regulation stated. For 2021, Haas will get around 110% of CFD and Wind tunnel time, and the figure might change on June 30 when the sliding scale will be reset to reflect the current state of play.

If Haas (as predicted) finish this season at the bottom of the table, they could get a whopping 115% of aero testing allowed for 2022, which will be very significant for the team as the other teams will get less aerodynamic test time. Therefore, giving them a possible advantage over their aero.

So perhaps, Haas decision to abandon its 2021 development might be crucial for their middle-long term target, especially with the additional personnel from Ferrari as well as the influx of cash from Dimitri Mazepin. Whether or not, Haas will succeed, only time will tell. (geomotorsport.id/Rifqi Satria K)
