2021 : Emergence of another Schumacher in Formula 1?

Mick and Michael Schumacher

GEOMOTORSPORT.ID - Schumacher, The name which common not only for casual Formula One fans but also that of an average person. That name is most adored by veteran fans who had witnessed the phenomenon of the Schumacher Brothers. They had privilege to experience the event of Michael and his younger brother, Ralf, rising through the ranks and competing in the grid for more than a decade.

Let us call a spade a spade, Michael is typically regarded as the better driver between the both of them and simultaneously regarded as one of the best drivers to have ever graced the Formula One scene. To summarize his magnificent and decorated career, his success began when he joined Benetton Formula 1 Racing Team and winning back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995 before switching to drive for Scuderia Ferrari in the following year, with the Italian based team.

The legendary German driver carved his own glory by setting multiple new records before retiring for the first time in 2006 and returning to the race track between 2010 and 2012 to drive for the new Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team with seven World Drivers’ Championship titles to his name. Michael has proven himself to be one of the best Formula 1 drivers to have ever embraced this sport after his retirement, fans have begun to ask the question of who is worthy to take Schumacher’s “mantle”. Of course, the only one that can continue Michael Schumacher’s legacy is his only son, Mick Schumacher.

Mick Schumacher’s motorsports career kicked off during his karting years back in 2008 under the pseudonyms “Mick Junior” and “Mick Betsch”, which is his mother’s maiden name to avoid publicity. He started to use his real surname when he pursued formula classes and In 2015 ADAC Formula 4 Championship with Van Amersfoort Racing team. A year later, Mick switched to Prema Powerteam, a team that is linked with the Ferrari Driver Academy and achieved success.

In 2018, the German hotshot ended the season as the champions of the Formula 3 European Championship. After being promoted to FIA Formula 2 Championship a year later with high hopes despite finishing 12th in his second season debut, the twenty-one year old driver is crowned champions in the last race of the season at Sakhir. Few months later, he was confirmed to drive with Haas in 2021 FIA Formula 1 season with a multi-year contract. Tim Principal of Scuderia Ferrari Team, Mattia Binotto believed that Mick Schumacher can join the Prancing Horse around 2023. In light of this wonderful news, fans are now optimistic that Mick will be able to pick up his father’s mantle as one of the successful drivers of Scuderia Ferrari.

Steve Saint, an Equadorian business entrepreneur once said “Your story is the greatest legacy that you will leave to your friends, it is the longest-lasting legacy that you will leave to your heirs”. With such a big shoe to fill, there have been a lot of debate on whether or not Mick will be able to realize his full potential as a Schumacher or will he remain in his father’s shadow. In contrast, the new Haas recruit and 2020 F2 Champion has stepped out of his father’s shadow to make a name for himself. 8 months ago, he wrote a letter and it is reposted by Auto Bild Magazine where he stated that the pressure he has is about his own performance rather than carrying the name of his father. This goes to show that there is still hope for young Mick to create his own legacy and not carry such a huge unnecessary burden of trying to fill in his dad’s shoes. Finally, I personally believe the rookie sensation will indeed be bigger than his father and achieve new heights in the Formula 1 scene. By judging his previous achievements, he has a huge potential to become a new icon and a legend of this honorable sport. (geomotorsport.id/Aiman)
